Mexican lifestyle reloaded: Acapulco Design launches the "Ring Table"

The "Acapulco Chair" from Mexico has long since become a furniture icon. Munich-based studio Acapulco Design has now expanded the collection with a table that, like its seat neighbor, is modern, Mexican and somewhat nostalgic all at once.

Still the inventor of the "Acapulco Chair" is unknown. Rumor has it that a French tourist designed the piece of furniture as a comfortable seat for his beach vacation in Mexico. The unknown person would hardly have guessed that the design from the 1950s still inspires people around the world today - because there is no license. That's why Munich-based Benjamin Caja, founder of Acapulco-Design, brought the classic Mexican armchair back to Germany from his vacation trip. He has been working with designers on his Acapulco collection for six years, which has since been expanded to include dining chairs and side tables in addition to the lounge chair. Most recently, he launched the "Ring Table" together with industrial designer Olivia Herms.

Six years ago Daniel Caja brought the Mexican furniture classic to Germany. Now he expanded the collection with the "Ring Table", at which friends and family can gather at a diameter of 1.20 meters.

The structure of the dining table follows a clear system: the center is formed by a metal ring in which the butterfly-shaped struts converge. In combination with the beveled tabletop, the entire concept appears delicate and casual at the same time, despite the robust materials. "The table is a natural evolution of the 'Acapulco Chair' and inspired by its delicate and complex shapes," explains Olivia Herms. "The challenge was to find the right balance. The 'Acapulco Chair' is an inspiration, but the table is not meant to be a copy or a literal transfer." We think the duo succeeded very well.
