Photographs by Mandy Barker

Using the power of images to draw attention to plastic pollution in the world's oceans is the goal of Mandy Barker. To do so, the photographer cooperates with scientists, goes on field trips, and has been documenting the harmful effects of trash on marine life for more than ten years. The photos, which sometimes depict broken, balloons, sometimes toys, sometimes microplastics, combine the contradiction of initial aesthetic attraction and critical message, with which the artist wants to reach viewers emotionally. For the series "Penalty", the British artist launched an appeal on social media: she asked people to send her stranded footballs from the sea. She received quite a few hundred. "This resulted in an amazing collaboration with people from all over the world who wanted to help raise awareness about the state of the oceans. It went far beyond what I had hoped for," said Barker, who has won several awards. ncm
